hrough.
W: He liked to kick a ball around, and his greatest heroes were Man U.
W: Out with his mates he's tear about, all day they'd climb and swim and
dive.
W: On rainy days you'd find him playing sonic on his Megadrive.
W: But on a winter's evening, what he'd really like to do,
W: Was sit and chat with Granny, as they talked her knitting grew.
W: And Granny's needles flashed and clicked, and the wool went round and
round.
W: And Billy felt so warm and safe when he heard that magic sound.
W: One day he asked if Gran would teach him how to do that magic craft.
W: His Dad said, "Knitting's not for lads!" But Gran said "Now Bert, don
't be daft!
W: If Billy wants to learn to knit, then heavens, that's what he should
do."
W: She told them then of men who down the ages had done knitting too.
W: The lighthousemen and sailors, the crofters in the highlands.
W: Who knows, maybe Mandela used to knit on Robben Island.
W: And Granny's needles flashed and clicked, and the wool went round and
round.
W: And Billy felt so warm and safe when he heard that magic sound.
W: So Granny taught him all she knew, he learned so fast you can't belie
ve,
W: And by the next day Billy Brown had done a back and half a sleeve.
W: One day he took his wool to school, his friends all laughed and calle
d him names.
W: "Soppy! Softy! Mummy's girl! We don't want sissies in our games!"
W: But by the fire with Granny, such wondrous things he made.
W: "By gum!" said Dad, "Our Billy here has really made the grade!"
W: And Billy's needles flashed and clicked and the wool went round and r
ound.
W: It made him feel so warm and safe when he heard that magic sound.
W: Blue Peter held a competition, children sent in their best tries.
W: And every kid in Billy's class was hoping they would win the prize.
W: The winning entry was a jumper such as folk had never seen.
W: With purples yellow reds and blues, and vivid swirls of emerald green
W: And faster than the measles, the news spread round the town.
W: The winner there on telly was their BEST MATE, Billy Brown.
W: And Billy's needles flashed and clicked and the wool went round and r
ound.
W: It made them feel so warm and safe when they heard that magic sound.
W: Soon Billy's Knits were all the rage; he made the new strip for Man U
.
W: And for men and women round the globe soon knitting was the thing to
do.
W: Frank Bruno gave up boxing 'cos compared to knitting it seemed tame,
W: And Cantona would knit a row to calm his nerves before the game.
W: And in the cabinet meetings all around the world,
W: The ministers all talked of peace as they knitted and they purled.
W: A million needles flashed and clicked and the wool went round and rou
nd.
W: It made them feel so warm and safe when they heard that magic sound.
W: And the world became a safer place with that magic clicking sound
